Protecting Your Smile for Life
Finishing braces or Invisalign® clear aligner treatment is an exciting milestone. But your orthodontic journey doesn’t end when your appliances come off. Wearing your clear retainers as instructed is essential to maintaining your beautiful, straight smile.
Teeth naturally want to shift back to their original positions. Retainers hold them in place while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilize. Without proper retainer wear, teeth can move — sometimes quickly.
Retainer Do’s ✅
- Wear them exactly as instructed
- Store them in their protective case when not in your mouth
- Keep them away from pets (dogs love to chew them!)
- Rinse with lukewarm water when removing
- Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush
- Use clear retainer cleaning crystals or tablets as recommended
Retainer Don’ts ❌
- Do not leave them wrapped in a napkin (most retainers are accidentally thrown away this way)
- Do not place them in your pocket or loose in a bag
- Do not expose them to heat (hot water, dishwasher, car dashboard)
- Do not use toothpaste (it can scratch and make them cloudy)
- Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals
- Do not eat or drink (except water) while wearing them
- Heat can warp retainers, and once they lose their shape, they may no longer fit properly.
What If My Retainer Feels Tight?
A slightly snug fit can happen if you’ve missed wear time. Resume consistent wear immediately. If the retainer does not fully seat or feels painful, contact your orthodontic office right away. Waiting can allow more shifting to occur.
Most patients are instructed to:
- Wear retainers full-time (20–22 hours per day) for the first several months after treatment
- Remove them only to eat, only drink water, and brush/floss
- Transition to nighttime wear only as directed by your orthodontist
- Continue wearing them at night long-term to prevent shifting
Consistency is key. Skipping nights can allow teeth to move.
